Cyanamide is also prepared by the action of ammonia with cyanogenic halides. Cyanamide polymerizes to dicyandiamide when heated over 150° C and to tricyantriamide as well as to melamine. Cyanamide, the amide of normal cyanic acid, is a white crystal that melts at 45° C. It is readily soluble in water, alcohol and diethyl ether. It is prepared commercially by the carbide process from the carbonate derived from limestone or by the desulphurization of theorem in the presence of catalyst (mercuric oxide).
