The following varieties of cotton are also cultivated in the state:
Ø Long-staple cotton: It has the longest fibre ranging from 24mm to 27mm. The fibre is long, fine, and shimmery. It is used in making clothes of superior quality. There has been immense progress in the manufacturing of long staple cotton post-independence.
Ø Medium-staple cotton: The fibre length is between 20mm to 24mm Around 44% of the total cotton production in the country comes from the medium staple.
Ø Short-staple cotton: This cotton fibre is of inferior quality less than 20mm in length. It is used in manufacturing sub-standard quality of clothes and fetches a lower price.
Tamil Nadu is the top producer of cotton in India. The state contributes to about 1.55% of the total production in the country. The government of Tamil Nadu has also initiated the ‘Tamil Nadu Cotton Cultivation Mission’ to facilitate the cultivation of the cotton crop. The mission has been launched to enhance productivity, production, and funds under the Government of India Cotton Technology Mission. Under this mission for the year 2019-2020 as illustrated below, the farmers would be issued with subsidized cotton seeds, bio-fertilisers, bio pesticides, plant protection, weedicides, and pulse seeds for intercrops. The scheme also intends to promote the indigenous variety of cotton.
