One of the world's fastest expanding areas in aquaculture. India has huge possibilities for both marine and inland fishing, with its enormous coastline region. The country's 2.36 million hectares of tanks and ponds, 7 500 km of the coasts, and an area of 1.1 million brackish water provides a ground for fish-growing, are the world's second-biggest aquaculture market share. The fishing industry offers a livelihood for over 28 million people in India.

Asia has the biggest proportion of worldwide fish output throughout the previous twenty years, as seen in the 2020 report of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Driven by sea fishing and inland fishing, the world catch fish production hit its greatest level in 2018, reaching 96.4 million tonnes. Chinese, Indonesia, Peru, India, Russia, the USA, and Vietnam were among the top seven producers representing ~50 percent of the entire world output for capture.

Indian Market overview
In India, a total fish output of 6,24 million metric tonnes (MBT) is predicted in 2018, which is close to two-thirds of the country's total fish output from catches and cultivations. The increase in the fish farming industry comes mostly from the aquaculture of freshwater, while marine finfish culture is not widely practiced. Approximately 12.8 percent of all animal proteins eaten by India are freshwater fish.
The world's production accounts for 7.58 percent of India. The country's fish output achieved an all-time high in 2019 to 2020 of 14.16 million metric tonnes. In terms of gross value added (GVA), the fishing industry provides 1.24%, and in agriculture GVA 7.28%.
Impact of formulated aquafeeds
The first feeding facility for fish was made operational in 2008 and India did not appear on the list of Asian countries that manufactured formulated fish feed until 2007-08. The U.S. Soybean Export Council has been conducting demonstrations in feed-based farming since 2003 to open up some chances for the fish feeding business. The regularisation of pangasius farming in India was aligned with the introduction of properly prepared extruded floating fish feed. With the advent of extruded feed, the rise of pangasius farming was strongly promoted and a new major species were added to the land.

Impact of feed-based fish farming
Many more advantages have been brought about by the introduction and popularisation of feed farming in India. Because of the adoption of formulated feeds, bio loading contributing to water bodies in the country has decreased dramatically. In the case of 1 MMT of formulated feed for fish agriculture with an approximate FCR yield of 1.5 in 2019, conventional fish feeds operating at 3-4 FCR were shifted to one kilogram of fish output.
This means that around 2 to 3 MMT of food supplements based on foods with inadequate nutritional properties have not been administered in ponds since the use of formulated diets began.
India has just 4 percent of the world's water resources and 17 percent of the world’s population and so water conservation is of key concern. Thus, it is important to infer that the feed-based system has helped greatly to water conservation which is an issue of national concern.

Bottom Line
India has been the world's second-largest producer of freshwater fish. When improved methods and species are accepted, their development is quite far-reaching.
Much of the Indian aquaculture is still focused on traditional techniques of cultivation. Converting it to current ways of farming would enhance fish productivity and also address environmental sustainability.
The sea fish farmers are not exploited yet and, given the huge coastline of the nation, it is still another big chance to build commercial hatchery technologies and suited farming techniques.
