Balls are a huge part of the sports industry, sports such as Football, Rugby, Cricket, Hockey, Volleyball have ball as a main component. These games revolve around the ball. The oldest ball can be dated back to 2500 BC. The Mayans are believed to have invented the first ball sport, called Pitz. The Ancient humans made balls out of leather and stuffed it with hairs, or any soft material inside. It was Charles Goodyear, who invented the first rubber ball, in the 1850’s. It was observed to have an extremely short life. It would break and wear down really fast. To solve this issue they added a flannel around the rubber ball. The Original balls would either be black or white, depending on the background. But The ITF or International Tennis Federation changed the colour to Yellow in 1972. This was done to make the ball more visible to the audience.

3. Grass Duty Ball: A grass duty ball is a strain resistant treated regular ball. It is used on grass and the strain resistant treatment is made to make sure it doesn’t change colour.
4. High Altitude Duty Ball: The above mentioned balls will start flying in altitudes from 4000 ft and higher. So we’ve High Altitude Duty Ball.

● Manufacturing Process.
Creating rubber plugs.
The first step is to smash a soft rubber between two rollers. This makes the rubber gain some firmness and lose its rubberiness. This process creates a firm form of that soft rubber, these are called the Rubber Plugs.
Glueing the Rubber plugs together.
Once the plugs are made, they are covered in a super adhesive, then they are glued together through a process of heating and pressurizing. It is called ‘Vulcanizing.’ Once we vulcanize the two rubber plugs or shells they become unbreakable.
Adding Air inside the rubber ball.
Before gluing them together, they’re filled with pressurized air. This makes the ball bouncy and workable in high altitudes. These balls are filled with either pressurized air or a mixture of air and nitrogen. Nitrogen helps keep the ball from deflating and the air keeps it bouncy.

Sanding the Rubber Balls and Applying adhesive.
Once they’re joined and injected with pressurized air or nitrogen air combination. The balls are sanded to give them a rough surface. Once the sanding is completed. The balls are sent through a spinning drum of super strong adhesive. And a layer of adhesive is applied to the rubber ball.
Making Felt and applying adhesive to them.
Now Felt is the green/yellow stringing cover on the tennis ball. It is made out of either nylon or wool. This is to ensure the durability and spinning of a ball. Even the decision to whether to use wool or another synthetic material depends on what the needed durability and spinning of the ball is. Once this felt is made they’re passed through a vat of adhesive.

Covering the ball.
Once they pass the adhesive vat. They are applied to the rubber ball. This is done either by a machine or hands. Even though hand material is the preferred way of getting the job done.
Removing air bubbles & another vulcanization.
Once the felt are added. The balls are sent in a rolling machine that takes out all its air bubbles. Once the air bubbles are out, these balls go through another vulcanization. This makes the felt grip around the rubber ball stronger and firm. And they are, then, quickly dried and packed in an airtight can. And that is how Tennis or paddle balls are made.
