Structure of a 3 way stop cock.
As can be seen in the picture above, a 3 way cock has three cocks, obviously. These cocks also work as locks. It has two Female luer locks on both sides and a male luer lock in front. And just like any other cock a tap on the top. All these cocks or port or lock, whichever you’re comfortable calling them have caps. They are colour coded, in blue and red, to easily differentiate their functions. If a 3 way stop cock is blue it is to be used for the Intravenous system, if it’s red, use it for the intra-arterial system. Some 3 way stop cock comes with an extension tubing connected with them.

Functions of 3 Way Stop Cock and the Method to use it.
There are two main functions of 3 Way Stop Cock.
➔ To restore and stop the infusion of flow, safely
➔ To give two additional ports during administering the fluids.
If the cap is red, it indicates the 3 way stop cock is to be used for blood sampling, through arteries.
A 3 way stop cock provides 3 way flow.
- From Inlet to Outlet
- From Inlet to Side ports
- And lastly, from side ports to outlets.
The flow is controlled with the tap on top. It (the tap) can also reduce the line to one, in case of drug infusion or for attaching extension lines. For blood samples a needle is used through an injection port.
Here’s how to use a 3 way stop cock.
Step 1. Rotate the Cap to a close position.
Before we start, it is important the ports are all closed. It ensures the 3 way cock doesn’t spill the fluid and stays sterile.
Step 2. Attach the venipuncture device.
Once the ports are closed and locked attach the venipuncture device i.e. a needle to the 3 way stop cock. Once attached, fasten it with the help of the rotating lock.
Step 3. Rotate the cap to open position.
Once done with attaching the venipuncture to the 3 way stop cock, rotate the cap to open the ports and adjust the Infusion set’s flow. And then you just attach it to the veins or arteries depending on the need and you’re done.

● Check the 3 way stop cock before use. Check for structural and functional damage on the product and the packaging. An unopened package means it hasn’t been used, it is sterile, it is nontoxic and it is non pyrogenic. The opposite is true for an opened package of 3 way stop cock.
