A surgical drape is a non-woven covering made of disposable material that is used to cover apatient's region. A fenestration (an aperture) in a drape allows the surgeon toexecute the procedure. It is available in a variety of sizes, depending on thesort of operation. Drapes differ from one hospital to the next. For an eye operation, a15-square-inch drape with a 3-square-inch fenestration might suffice, whereasfor open heart surgery, the largest drape available, a laparotomy drape thatcovers the entire body, is required. Surgical drapes are used to keep theoperating room clean and bacteria-free.
