Fortifiedfoods are food products that contain added micronutrients (essential vitaminsand minerals). They are intended to supplement the micronutrient intake of atarget population and provide benefit to health, or an overall benefit tohealth and nutrition, as compared to unfortified foods on the same market.Fortification can occur at any point in the food supply chain, from agriculturalproduction through retail sales to individual consumption. Micronutrientfortified foods have been found to be beneficial in combating nutrientdeficiencies among populations with high rates of vitamin and mineraldeficiencies, including those affected by poverty, famine, disease, naturaldisasters and wars.
