POWER CABLES

Download

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

A power cable is an assembly of one or more electrical conductors, usually held together with an overall sheath. The assembly is used for transmission of electrical power. Power cables may be installed as permanent wiring within buildings, buried in the ground, run overhead, or exposed. Power Cables - their insulation of cross-linked polyethylene allows these cables to transmit more power with better resistance to power surges. They can be laid underground, in conduits or remain in the open air.

The wire and cables market in India comprised of nearly 40% of the electrical industry. According to research, it is expected to double in size in the next five years. The industry is growing at a CAGR of 15% as a result of growth in the power and infrastructure segments. Low growth in power generation during the last three years and a substantial decline in the generating capacity in 1995-96 have not deterred the demand for power cables from rising to 30,788 km in 1995-96 (Apr-Jan) from 18,247 km in 1991-92.

The major buyers of power cables are SEBs and public sector power utilities.

SEBs account for 80 per cent of the total demand for power cables.
