With the fast development of cellular telephones, a completely new segment of tower industry has emerged. The demand has increased precipitately in sympathy with the galloping expansion of cellular telephones.
With the rapid expansion, the telecom towers industry seems to be heading for a capacity glut. The sector will soon see over 250,000 towers owned by operators and stand alone companies. As a result, the telecom tower sector is seeing a wave of consolidation with smaller players (having less than 6,000 towers) looking for mergers or complete sale.
The industry may witness two contradictory trends in near future. With the advent of 3G services and increasing MoUs in the urban areas, industry will see growth in utilization and fresh new proposals. On other hand, renting and utilisation in the low population density rural sector is likely to remain under pressure for upcoming near future.
