The steel industry is one of the biggest heavy industries of the state. Chhattisgarh is rich in minerals. It produces 20% of the country’s total cement produced. Chhattisgarh is also known as the rice bowl of central India. With 80% of the population (around 32, 55,062 families) depending on it as the main source of income, the state is heavily engaged in agriculture. Chhattisgarh accounts for 137.9 lakh Ha. of land, which translates to 4.15 % of the total land mass of the country. 37% of the land (47.5 lakh Ha.) is under agriculture.
Mineral
Chhattisgarh is the richest State in terms of mineral wealth, with 28 varieties of major minerals, including diamonds. It hosts a wide variety of minerals found in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic terrains. These mineral resources have immense potential for large investment in mining, setting of mineral based industries and generating employment in the State. The large deposits of coal, iron ore, limestone, bauxite, dolomite and tin ore are located in several parts of the State.
