Pesticides are substances meant for attracting, seducing, destroying or mitigating any pest. They are a class of biocide. The most common use of pesticides is as plant protection products, which in general protect plants from damaging influences such as weeds, diseases or insects. Pesticides can be classified by target organism, chemical structure and physical state. Biopesticides include microbial pesticides and biochemical pesticides. Plant-derived pesticides, or "botanicals", have been developing quickly. These include the pyrethroids, rotenoids, nicotinoids, and a fourth group that includes strychnine and scilliroside. The global market for crop protection chemicals, in terms of active ingredient volume was estimated at 2,075.5 KT in 2011 and is expected to reach 3,136.1 KT by 2018, growing at a CAGR of 3.2% from 2013 to 2018. India produces 90,000 metric tons of pesticides a year. India’s pesticide industry is the largest in Asia and the twelth largest in the world.
