What is Guar Gum?

Guar Gum, or, Guaran is a fibre found in Guar seeds. It is rich in Galactomannan Polysaccharide, which is a thickening agent found in food. Galactomannan Polysaccharide is used in cooking and industrial application. It is used in the Pharmaceutical industry, paper industry, food industry, textiles, explosive, and cosmetic industry.

How is Guar Gum extracted?

As mentioned before, Guar gum is a fiber found in the guar seed. The guar seeds have to go through a few processes.

Guar seeds are roasted, reduced, sieved and polished.

They break the seeds and separate the endosperm from the germs. These endosperms are also called “Undehusked Guar Split.”

Then they separate the fiber from the endosperm through polishing. By doing this they obtain refined guar splits.

And when you powder these refined guar splits, you get Guar gum powder.

The husks and germs are used to feed cattles, they’re called Guar Meals.

Paper Industry and Guar Gum.

In 2012, in a workshop at Nantes, France, a conference paper was presented. It was written on polysaccharide found in plants and seaweed. They came to conclude that guar gum with a few additives could improve the wet web strength of a paper before drying.

This could ensure the paper machine runs effectively. The modern paper machines used are highly pressurised in width and size. This could lead to high chances of web break due to the wet web strength and web tension profile.

Guar powder increases the surface properties of the dry paper and it also improves the retention of smaller particles and chemicals.

Due to the guar’s ability to increase the interaction of areas of contact and modify the fibres it improves the connection between fibres in both Wet and Dry web.

There are many reasons why Paper Industry uses Guar gums, such as,

Guar Gum works as a Binding agent.

Guar gum can form hydrogen bonding to water molecules, which in result turns it from a powder to this gummy, sticking binder.

Guar Gum is a Thickening agent.

The thickening agents in Guar gum works the best on paper compared to any other options available in the market.

The fibre’s in the Guar Gum.
